Description |
Black and white sketch of a postcard of the first St. Clair County Courthouse and only courthouse built at Cahokia. The building is an upright log cabin one story in height with porches on the two sides visible. The position of the windows and doors are in the shadow of the porch. The card reads on the front: "Old Courthouse Going Back to St. Clair". This one-room log building, believed to have been built at Cahokia, Ill in 1736 and to have served as seat of government for the French, British and United States governments of Illinois and as the first courthouse of St. Clair County, is to be returned to its original site at Cahokia this fall from Jackson Park in Chicago, where it has been on exhibition for more than 30 years. This postcard is the first of five St. Clair County Courthouses which compose a set of postcard sketches. The first sketch and not accessioned is of the First Courthouse at Kaskaskia. That postcard reads on the front: First Court House of St. Clair Co., Kaskaskia 1790-1814 Judges of Court of Common Pleas: Antoine Girardin, John Dumoulin, Phillip Engel Purchase Price "Illegible". The three courthouses built on the Belleville Public Square can be found in 2000.026.0034. 0035 and 0036 |
