International Shoe Factory building demolished by Louis Ruser and youngest son, Ken Ruser. For the building see 2002.064.0001 Exhibit Material: International Shoe of St. Louis, MO purchased the Sterling Shoe Co. on South First St. and in 1913 with the help of the Commercial Club purchased adjoining land for expansion. The company employed 100 people and along with the expansion installed a recreation area and new restrooms and showers. By 1921 the company had a daily capacity of 2,700 pairs of shoes and employed 275. International Shoe had become the nation's largest show manufacturer. 571 people were employed in Belleville with a weekly payroll of $10,000. In 1933 employees organized Local 28 and operated a co-op cafeteria.
